How to Start Working Out Again After Taking Time Off
Exercise is one of the most important things for anyone who wants to live a healthy life. Starting the exercise may not be easy and it requires a firm decision and discipline especially if you had done in before and then stopped. Below are some of the important steps on how to start working out again.
Asses your fitness level
1. Know your current physical shape.
Knowing your current physical state is the first step to take when you want to start a workout. This helps you to understand yourself well especially your shape/weight, any health problem, among others.
2. Consult a doctor
Talk to your doctor about your plan to start the workout and he/she will guide you on how to go about it. He/she will also tell you what is best for you especially if you have some health problems such as heart conditions etc.
3. Diet
Eating right is very important for your workout. Monitor your diet well so that you are aware of the number of calories that you take in everyday and also know the number of calories that you want to lose per day. Choose the types of food that will be good for your body as you exercise.
Have a program
1. Have a goal
Have a clear goal on what you want to achieve with the workout. The goal may be to do with weight loss, fighting off diabetes & heart disease etc. This will act as a clear guideline on where you want to go hence follow the right path to achieve your goal.
2. Have a balanced routine
Go for a balanced routine for instance aerobic exercise, flexibility training and strength training. Regardless of the type of exercise that you decide to go for, start out simple.
3. Go for the type of exercise that you like
Choose the type of exercise that you like so that it is easier for you. Going for something that you don’t like may make it hard for you to follow the routine. Note that, gym is not the only place to have workout. There are several other metabolism boosting types of exercises that you may enjoy for instance swimming, hiking and dancing, among others.
Starting the workout
1. Time
Choose a time that you can easily integrate it to your lifestyle and all you need to do is to simply make it a priority. Set a specific time of the day for at least some days of the week and make sure you stick to it.
2. Get the equipment
After the above steps, assemble all the equipment that you may need for your workout. Such include shoes, home equipment, among others. This is also the time to decide on whether to go to the gym or to work with a team if you would enjoy working with other people.
3. Start small and allow time to recover
Start small and do not strain yourself especially when you have just begun. As you progress, you can go for tougher exercises when your body has already adjusted to the routine. In case you encounter some problems (e.g. joint pain) especially after you have just started, allow time to recover before you go back to the exercise.
Note that, starting an exercise routine is a very important decision to make but it should not be overwhelming. If you plan carefully and pace yourself well, you will manage to establish a healthy habit that will last for a long time.
